CABIN LIFE

Norwegian wood has been a term since way before the 1965 song by The Beatles. Surrounded by forests, Norwegians have built their houses out of wood for centuries and centuries. While Norwegian homes of today tend to be more modern, the idea of the simple cabin life is important to many.

While cabin life in the mountains is popular during fall and winter, the ideal Norwegian summer house is small, whitewashed and located within a stone’s throw from the sea. Calm, blue and inviting in summer, roaring white and foamy in winter, the sea is an important source of home décor inspiration, and many like to bring the summer house style to their home as well.

For centuries, the people were modest farmers, log/timber workers and shermen who had to prioritize quality and practicality over quantity. The attitudes of our ancestors are re ected in modern Nordic design, portraying cleanliness and simplicity, communicating that less is more.

The space, fresh air and sense of calm provided by nature is brought into people’s homes, creating light, yet cozy atmospheres. Decorating with objects of pure materials, such as wood, porcelain, linen and owers, as well as the combination of rustic elements of nature with modern design, create the contrasts that are the very essence of the Nordics.

Some prefer to enjoy their meals outside, with nature as their scenery, others take nature with them inside, decorating their tables with rustic elements such as wooden branches, sea shells, pinecones, little rocks and berries.
